Tour Locations
The Kenny Gardens 839 Halibut Avenue
Two residences along the Intracoastal Waterway feature a minimalist grass landscape, employing natural materials like weathered wood and stone to create a tranquil ambiance. Ornamental rock pathways are flanked by salt-tolerant plants such as Blue Daze and rosemary, which offer both ground cover and privacy. Highlights include a mature Fig Tree, a raised herb garden, and a succulent garden. A new Food Forest designed by Rebel Farms replicates a natural forest ecosystem, integrating various plant layers to encourage sustainability and self-sufficiency through permaculture principles. This garden features various fruits, nuts, herbs, flowers, and vegetables. It is intentionally structured to resemble a natural forest, with diverse layers from trees to shrubs, ground cover plants, vines, and more.
The Burden Garden 6472 River Road
This riverfront property beautifully integrates coastal landscaping elements, featuring container plantings and vibrant annual flowers that enhance the yard, maintain the natural shoreline’s appearance, and offer privacy. In the backyard, a new pergola, a clusia hedge, and palm trees help to soften the intense sunlight while preserving the scenic river view. Ongoing considerations for sunlight, water, salt air, wind tolerance, maintenance, and water requirements guide the landscape’s development.
The Gallagher Garden 6475 River Road
The landscaping vision for this garden focused on reclaiming lost privacy from nearby construction, managing the 45-degree slope causing erosion on one side of the house, and revitalizing the cramped, outdated decking. The landscape design journey started with only two mature Live Oaks and a Sable Palm. As time went on, the landscaping transformed into vibrant, eclectic ‘rooms’ that blend beautifully with native plants, palm trees, and seating areas surrounding the house. It now features unique artwork, abundant shade, and restored privacy.
The Beaty Garden 6322 River Road
Following the three principles of coastal landscape design has greatly improved this landscape:
1.) Use native plants that flourish in local environments
2.) Opt for salt-tolerant species
3.) Select drought-resistant varieties that require less water
Striking focal points within the landscape enhance the river view and include: Live Oak trees, raised flower and vegetable beds, Magnolia trees, container gardens, hardscape pathways, a fire pit seating area, and a patio for strolling to the dock.
The Kain & Dennis Garden 6312 River Road
This stop takes you on a journey from remnant maritime hammock, through vibrant black, white, and red mangroves, to the serene waters of Mosquito Lagoon. These mangrove forests are vital components of the intercoastal ecosystem in southern Florida, offering protection against storm surges and serving as habitats for fish and roosting areas for wading birds. Here, mangroves reach their northernmost limit, thriving only in regions that avoid prolonged hard freezes. This environment supports native species while encouraging the removal of invasive plants like Brazilian Pepper. All non-native species are contained in pots. Additionally, you’ll find a planted herb garden, a variety of intriguing specimen plants, each with its own unique story, and a collection of staghorn ferns, some of which are nearly fifty years old.
The Augusto Garden 890 Bonita Avenue
This two-story residence features a coastal, drought-tolerant landscape design that thrives in mixed sunlight. You’ll discover Bottle Palms, Plumerias, various succulents, an array of Birds of Paradise, and Desert Roses. The garden is thoughtfully divided into dedicated “rooms” that incorporate hardscape pavers, artistic garden pieces, benches, bamboo fencing, and rocks of all sizes to delineate each area. Unique pottery and wind chimes crafted by the homeowner, along with playful garden art, contribute to the serene, whimsical, and Zen-like ambiance of this garden.
The Queen's Gambit 4627 Van Kleeck Drive
The Queen’s Gambit showcases elegant Italian villa-style architecture, unique interiors, and imaginative landscaping. Each column and Corinthian tree reflects the chessboard, featuring Queens at the entrance and Kings at the back. The balusters are crafted to resemble pawns, bringing the game of chess to life. Surrounding the board are Medjool date palms, representing bishops, while triangle palms symbolize knights. A stunning feature is the “artisan” installation of a hand-carved, cobalt-tile migration of turtles that gracefully moves from the entry gates to the beach along the driveway, entry portico, living room, and infinity pool.
