7 Hidden Gardens of Sugar Mill
Vicki calls her yard a Living Garden and it’s easy to see why! A natural space, not a formal garden boasts a beautiful golf course and pond view. The rotation of blooms guarantees birds, bees and butterflies year-round. Jasmine ground cover, a Wild Coffee bush, pink dwarf creeping Mimosa along with Snow Squarestem attract Swallowtails and Monarchs. The abundance of host plants, even though less attractive, guarantees life. Bird feeders and bird baths abound. Be ready tosnap lots of photos!
Barbara’s pie-shaped yard features an artistic design of wonderful nostalgic sections. A bronze star from a local veteran’s bridge welcomes you as you enter this funky garden. The mosaic wall art and obelisk catch your eye as you pass by the small citrus garden. You can’t miss the large shell grotto, concrete head garden, and bowling ball pyramid. Truly an eclectic garden under the cover of old oak trees.
After the loss of a large tree, Jean and Dave changed the landscape in order to attract more butterflies and birds. By adding a bird feeder, bird bath, Firebush, Firespike and Lantana they achieved both goals! In addition, an aquascape Koi pond with waterfalls and a retainer area was added. The mixed contrasting foliage surrounding the pond gives it a natural look and provides much interest at their breakfast table! Several other areas to note in their garden emphasize the Red, White and Blue golf courses at Sugar Mill with beds of blue Plumbago, red Canna Lily, white Begonia, Blue Daze, and red Pentas facing the golf course.
This garden reflects the love of bright, colorful things that Margie showcases from spending many years in Singapore. Right off the bat, large painted birdcages hanging in a small tree catch your eye. Bright, cheery yellow furniture greets you in her well-maintained backyard. Swallowtail and monarch butterflies are drawn to the parsley, fennel and lantana planted in her beautiful yard. It reflects the many gardening classes that Margie has taken to expand her love of the landscape. Don’t miss the gorgeous view of the White golf course, too!
Catherine’s hidden delight is located on a hill overlooking the White Golf Course. It reminds one of Italy with olive trees and blooming roses dotting the pathway. Pillars of bright green podocarpus alternate with tall white fence panels throughout the back of the property. On the steeper back side of the property, terraced plantings are placed in front of the podocarpus and white fencing giving the yard an air of the hills of Italy!
Susan and Bruce are environmentalists and have been greatly influenced by a visit to the Kingdom of the Monarchs in Central Mexico. The focus of their garden is attracting pollinators of all kinds with appropriate plant material in support of NSB as the 2nd Monarch City in Florida. This garden provides a variety of observations from a flower opening to the formation of a butterfly chrysalis and watching the butterfly emerge one to two weeks later. The garden is a hidden, layered wonderland of pollinator activity and peaceful contemplation of the world.
The Lodge at Sugar Mill 416 Sweet Bay Avenue
The Lodge at Sugar Mill offers a respite for family members and their guests. Its landscape invites both reflection and activity, with a prayer walk labyrinth for quiet moments, a tennis court and pickleball courts for play, and a walking path with a footbridge spanning the stream at the west side of the property. The views of the lake add to the tranquil atmosphere.
